• Train-wreck Entertainment, Glitter, and Heidi Montag

I love train-wreck shows. Just like watching a train-wreck, I just can’t turn away from a bad show. I have to see just one episode of that unbelievably terrible show in order to quench my thirsty curiosity. I’ve watched Joey, Matt Leblanc’s Friends spin-off; seen an episode or two of Falcon Beach, Canada’s answer to The O.C.; and even curled up to an episode of Britain’s murder mystery show, Rosemary & Thyme, a drama centred around two women who solve murders with their gardening skills (no, I am not joking.) But it’s not just TV shows I restrict my  train-wreck instinct to, the same goes for films and music. I’ve seen Glitter, a movie even Mariah fans don’t stand by; Wild Child, Emma Roberts’ take on a “bad-girl” boarding school student (who even swears!); and I have seen nearly every Olsen twins movie made (Billboard Dad or Holiday in the Sun anyone?) And when it comes to music, I’ve even heard a few Brooke Hogan songs. Which is why, as an avid train-wreck entertainment enthusiast, I was so looking forward to Heidi Montag’s performance in the Miss Universe 2009 pageant.

As you can tell from my “articles” page, I am a fan of The Hills. And just like every other fan of The Hills will tell you, Spencer Pratt is absolutely terrible. He is conniving, manipulative, and controlling. Miss Montag was a sweet girl from Colorado with big dreams. She was hyper, goofy and had a sweet boyfriend in the early seasons of the reality series. But as time went by, her and her boyfriend called it quits and she met shady Spencer. His high-lighted hair and toothy grin fits the fakeness that is Spencer Pratt perfectly. But I have to hand it to him, he makes the show. His deviousness is what makes The Hills a hit; Besides Pratt, it doesn’t have too much going for it.

Mr. Pratt is also his wife’s manager. That is why when I read the headline stating Heidi would be performing on Miss Universe, to me, it had ‘Spencer Pratt’ written all over it. And I felt bad, because, naturally, it was bound to be a disaster. So as the platinum-blonde, surgically enhanced reality star pranced on stage, I cringed knowing that this was gonna get ugly. But unlike other YouTube viewers, I have to give credit where credit is due, Heidi did fine. She kept time, lip-synced correctly, and was enthusiastic. She seemed genuinely happy to be there, which made it fun to watch. No, it wasn’t exactly fair to other performers (Kelly Rowland and Flo Rida) who did perform live, but Montag did no worse than any other young upcoming singer. She was channeling Britney Spears/Christina Aguilera circa 1999, but so is every other young thing trying to shine. So, I bow down Spencer Pratt, you didn’t set your wife up for failure just to gain some publicity. Maybe you’re both not such a trainwreck after all….
