• Halloween: Hocus Pocus, Practical Magic and Casper

Ahh… tis the season for ghouls and goblins. Halloween is finally here and it’s time to enjoy the holiday, so grab your miniature Coffee Crisp and get into the spirit of trick-or-treat!

For Halloween I’ve been everything from a pea pod to The Wizard of Oz’s Dorothy, Baby Spice to a fairy princess, and even a person with the flu (that costume was obviously last minute). And while Halloween isn’t my favourite holiday (CHRISTMAS!), its certainly an enjoyable one to get hyper off of candy and scare yourself silly watching The Exorcist.

There are a number of great Halloween-themed movies, but my favs don’t come in the form of scary serial killers or axe murderers- I prefer the more low-key fare. So to celebrate this pumpkin-friendly occasion, here are three movies to put in your DVD player.

    Hocus Pocus (1993)

Starring: Bette Midler, Sarah Jessica Parker, Kathy Najimy, Omri Katz, Thora Birch, Vinessa Shaw.

About: Every kid from the ’90s totally loved this one! 300 years ago the Sanderson sisters were executed in Salem, Massachusetts for witchcraft. After Max accidentally brings them back by lighting a candle, he must save the children from the wicked witches.

    Practical Magic (1998)

Starring: Sandra Bullock, Nicole Kidman, Stockard Channing, Dianne Wiest, Goran Visnjic.

About: Two good-hearted witch sisters get themselves into quite a sticky situation when they resurrect a boyfriend from the dead. When Gillian’s (Nicole Kidman) boyfriend Jimmy (Goran Visnjic) starts physically abusing her, her sister Sally (Sandra Bullock) spikes Jimmy’s drink and accidentally kills him. When the witches resurrect Jimmy from the dead, he’s not the same old Jimmy, and trouble starts to brew.

    Casper (1995)

Starring: Christina Ricci, Bill Pullman, Eric Idle, Cathy Moriarty

About: I still have my original copy of Casper on VHS- such a great movie! When paranormal expert Dr. James Harvey moves his daughter Kat into a creepy mansion, they get more than they bargained for in the form of three wacky ghosts, and, of course, one friendly one too.

So enjoy these great Halloween-themed films, indulge in lots of candy and dress in a wacky costume because Halloween only comes this time each year.
